In our effort to make War a better place, we have set up three funds that will assist us in our goal. After reading this page, if you'd like to make a monetary donation, there will be instructions on how to do so.

Fund One

Preservation of and programs for BCHS:

The City of War will receive BCHS in 2008 from the McDowell County Board of Education and will immediately begin the implementation of several major programs at the school. It is being planned that 1) a COAL MINING MUSEUM will be established, to include all the memorabilia from BCHS and surrounding schools; 2) the BCHS Board of Directors will also pursue establishing a Science Center at the school hopefully with the help of NASA; 3) other programs asa determined by the governing board. This fund will also be utilized for the preservation of the physical structure.

Fund Two

City of War Programs:

This fund will include support for such activities such as the annual Homecoming and Fall Festival, maintenance of the city's web page, programs and playgrounds for youth, Christmas activities for the elderly and youth, publication of informational brochures and data about War and Big Creek District, and other programs as determined by the War City Council.

Fund Three

Economic Development in Big Creek District:

The future of Big Creek District and War will be directly related to development plans for the area. Contemplated are many possibilities around culture and tourism, including the development of a craft mall, the renovation of the War Train Station as a tourism reception center, the development of a Big Creek District Hatfield-McCoy Trail, campgrounds for ATV activities, Coal Heritage Trail Tourist signage, etc. Other possible development activities include linking with a college or university for the construction of an educational center, supporting the broadband infrastructure and cell phone towers, the construction of housing for people seeking employment in the coal mines or in other possibilities as determined by the Big Creek District Development Corporation, Inc. All donations should be made payable to: Big Creek District Development Fund, with your preference for Fund 1, Fund 2, or Fund 3, as stated above. Your donations will be made tax deductible and will be acknowledged.
